The Deal

Diners can take their pick of either a starter and main, or main and dessert, for lunch or dinner. Starter options include the likes of beetroot ravioli or arancini a’la contadina, consisting of deep-fried risotto dumplings with a filling of peas, fava beans and mint. Mains see visitors able to select dishes such as cous-cous crusted aubergine filled with cream cheese, shallot and almonds, or a chipotle corn and polenta cake served with aubergine, oven-dried tomatoes and sweet potato. Those opting for a dessert can choose from options including the likes of brioche, blueberry and white chocolate butter pudding, or pineapple, pear and chilli crumble. Whatever their decisions, a 175ml glass of house wine or beer is included to accompany each meal.

The Merchant

Influenced by large family meals during their childhood, brothers Adrian and Michael Daniel originally opened The Gate in Hammersmith in 1989 before eventually opening up a sister venue in Islington. Eager to showcase the diversity of vegetarian cooking, the menus feature a range of vegan and gluten-free options, while the wine list includes the likes of vegetarian, vegan and bio-dynamic varieties. The restaurants’ cooking has also gone on to form the basis for two cookbooks to try and encourage people to experiment with vegetarian cooking at home.

The Daniel brothers’ efforts have been recognised by The Gate’s receipt of the 2014 Sustainable Restaurant Association Most Improved award and an AA Rosette for 2013-2014 being awarded to the Hammersmith branch. OpenTable users gave the Hammersmith location 4.2/5, while the Islington branch received 4/5 from both Open Table users and The Metro. Reviewers were eager to praise the standard of the cooking at both venues, as well as the striking variety of options on the menu. The venues also currently boast over 2,200 likes on Facebook, along with sizeable followings on Twitter and Instagram.
