About Upnor Castle

Perched on the banks of the river Medway, Upnor Castle is an example of Elizabethan defensive architecture. Begun in 1559 and subsequently redeveloped between 1599 and 1601, the artillery fort was designed to protect warships berthed at Chatham docks. Today, the castle welcomes visitors who can explore the site with an audio guide, enjoy a picnic on the premises or browse themed souvenirs at the on-site gift shop. The venue also hosts an array of events including theatre plays and craft activities.
