Families of four can gain an insight into Tudor life at this 12th century castle, and learn about its part in the English Civil War

About This Deal

The Deal

A family of four can imagine life in Tudor times at Basing House. The ruined house has had a rich and interesting history, where visitors can walk in the footsteps of numerous monarchs. The House was besieged by Oliver Cromwell’s forces during the English Civil War, with many traces of the siege still visible. After the House fell, most of its bricks were used to build the neighbouring village of Old Basing. Visitors can wander around the ruins and enjoy the atmospheric and intricately designed walled garden. The 16th century Great Barn is the only Tudor building to have survived entirely intact at Basing House, and visitors can experience what it would have been like to be trapped inside while under attack from the Parliamentary Army in a sound and light show. They can also browse the shelves of the gift shop, and sip refreshments in the visitor’s centre. Tickets are available for two adults and two children or one adult and three children, and children under the age of five can enter for free.

The Merchant

Following a recent refurbishment, the family-friendly Basing House offers an array of attractions and learning experiences for visitors. Originally a Norman castle, but developed into a grand Tudor House it has played host to a selection of monarchs. During the English Civil War it was attacked by parliamentary troops on a number of occasions. The final assault in 1645 saw 800 men led by Oliver Cromwell himself breach the walls. Over the years, Basing House has hosted many archaeological digs which have unearthed the original sites of 500-year-old rooms, towers and bridges. The house also features a gift shop and museum, and serves as a starting point for the Old Basing Heritage Trail which winds through the eponymous village and surrounding countryside.
