The Deal

For special occasions guests can deliver a sweet message on a six- or eight-inch personalised cake from Cakeology. The chocolate or vanilla cake can be topped with red, lemon yellow, blue, pink or green icing, plus an image of choice on the top. The cake base will house personalised message and guests can feed a party of 10 with a six-inch cake, or 20 with a eight-inch cake.

Laura George of Cakeology tells Groupon about making a giant wedding cake, licking the spatula, and learning from a royal decorator.

G: What is your first memory of baking?

“I can remember sitting up on the bench with my mother and grandmother as a child, and licking the spoon that was used to stir the mixture. I’m not sure I was a great help at three or four years of age, but I was definitely good at eating the batter!”

G: Tell us about the awards you’ve won.

“We’ve won Knightsbridge PME School Cake Decorator of the Year for 2011 and 2012, Student Cake Decorator of the Year 2012, and PME Team Challenge Extravaganza Winner 2012. I think the Team Challenge Extravaganza award has to be our most impressive. We had three hours and a team of three people, and we managed to create a cake shaped like a full-sized wedding dress with a chocolate bodice, sugarpaste skirt and ruffled sash, and edible sugar flowers. It was quite something. It stood as tall as me and weighed over 200kg; we used 50kg of sugarpaste, 23 layers of sheet sponge and buckets of buttercream.”

G: Who or what are your culinary inspirations, and why?

“My customers, realistically, are my everyday inspiration. It’s their thoughts and wishes that we get to turn into reality, making their birthday or celebration complete. Eddie Spence is also truly inspiring. He’s known for his royal icing skills, having done the Jubilee cake for the Queen last year – but his patience when teaching is also amazing.”
