About This Deal
The Deal
Adrenaline aficionados can enjoy stunning views across the Cornish landscape while quenching their thirst for thrills. The static line parachute jump involves a solo jump from the aircraft at around 3,500ft, while tandem skydivers will jump with an instructor from 10,000ft. Safety is of paramount importance and training sessions are provided prior to each jump, lasting either half an hour or between six and eight hours depending on the option chosen.
To find out a little more about leaping from a moving aircraft thousands of feet from the ground, Groupon spoke to Cornish Parachute Club director Ben Wood.
How did you get into parachuting?
"My father Dave, who started the business, did his first jump back in 1973 when he joined the RAF. He now has over 8,000 skydives under his belt, meaning I have always grown up around parachuting. After doing my first jump at 16, I am now a multi-times national champion with just over 5,000 jumps to my name."
How would you describe it to a novice?
"Skydiving is such a unique experience, it is really very hard to describe it to somebody who hasn't tried it. There is the build up when you may feel a mixture of excitement and nerves and the total adrenaline of free-falling, followed by the quiet stillness of being suspended under canopy thinking, 'I just jumped out of a perfectly good plane'. You really do get a powerful sense of achievement once you have done it."
What sorts of views can people expect to see with your jumps?
"I think we have some of the best views in the UK when jumping here in Cornwall. On a clear day from 3,000ft you can see both the north and south coasts, past Lands End to the Isles of Scilly, St Ives and Newquay."
Where is the best place you have been parachuting and why?
"My personal opinion is that you can't beat flying through the skies over Cornwall on a warm, sunny day. A close second would be Mount Everest and the north face of the Eiger, which were truly spectacular, but it all comes down to personal preference."
What's your favourite thing about skydiving?
"The joy of knowing that we have a pretty cool job. You get to visit some amazing places and meet some fantastic people."
