The Railway
Run by a dedicated team of volunteers, Elsecar Heritage Railway follows the former Elsecar Branch of the South Yorkshire Railway, which came into use in 1850 and was reopened as a visitor attraction in the 1990s. Groups of four (usually £5 each) can ride the mile-long stretch of track as it snakes through rural South Yorkshire to Hemingfield, running beside the Dearne and Dove Canal. The Railway is based at Elsecar and Wentworth station, which houses attractions like a Coal Mining Museum Carriage, licensed buffet, tea room and shops, as well as frequently holding themed events and train driving experiences. A nearby chocolatier, patisserie and craft shops can make for a full family day out. Free parking is available, with the site located five minutes from the M1 J36.

Elsecar Heritage Railway is on track with a rating of 4/5 stars on TripAdvisor. The only heritage railway in South Yorkshire, praise was not only directed at the steam journey itself, but also the centre’s tea rooms and shops. The railway has also earned over 700 likes on Facebook
