Abano Terme is one of the most important and oldest spa towns in Italy and Europe. The place is at the foot of the Euganean Hills, in the centre of the Veneto region. The name derives from the Greek "à ponos" which means that it "takes away pain". The pedestrian zone, the heart of the new city, stretches from Piazza Fontana to the Giardini del Montirone and houses shops, hotels and thermal water fountains. Both ends of the city are connected by the municipal thermal park. The whole area around Abano is embraced by the Euganean Hills: it is worth taking a walk to the top of Colle del Montirone. The monumental entrance points to the importance of this hill, once rich in thermal springs that gush out naturally at a temperature of 80°C.
