Groupon’s Guide to Bruges
With a bundle of market squares, medieval brick buildings and canals adding up to an eclectic atmosphere, Bruges makes for a leap through time into the Middle Ages of northwest Belgium.
The historic centre of Bruges has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as Gothic landmarks such as the Town Hall and The Church of Our Lady illustrate significant stages in the commercial and cultural fields in medieval Europe. The artistic heritage is present throughout Groeninge Museum, housing six centuries of Flemish and Belgian painting, while the Bruges Art Route may be the star of a cycling tour through the city’s growing collection of paintings, sculptures and works-in-progress. Visitors with a sweet tooth will find chocolate-filled display windows all over town, and the Choco-Story provides an insight into the history and making of this cocoa treat.
Groupon’s Guide to Brussels
Known as the Capital of Europe, Brussels is a world-renowned cultural centre which combines museums and architectural landmarks with modern art. As the sun sets on the city’s many Art Nouveau buildings, century-old mansions and churches, the former fortress turns into a cosmopolitan place with bars, restaurants and buzzing nightlife.
Strolling through narrow alleyways and cobblestoned streets, tourists may visit La Grand-Place, a 17th century square blending Baroque, Gothic and Louis XIV architecture styles. Modern art form seekers may admire an iconic five-sphere structure at the Atomium, an imposing 102-metre complex that pairs up traditional cuisine with panoramic views over the city, in the on-site restaurant. At the foot of the Atomium, the whole Europe awaits to be explored at the Mini-Europe entertainment park that exhibits approximately 80 cities and 350 buildings in miniature. Music lovers can head to La Monnaie, the largest opera house in Belgium, featuring theatre performances, recitals, dance and classical concerts. No Brussels tour would be complete without taking a glimpse into the history of chocolate, a Belgian delight, at the Museum of Cocoa and Chocolate, where travellers with a sweet-tooth can even learn to make artisanal truffles.
Groupon’s Guide to Amsterdam
Sitting on the south bank of IJ Lake, Amsterdam is a port city connected to the North Sea, with Amstel River flowing through from south to north. Mixing vibrant nightlife and many diverse festivals with Renaissance architecture and cultural events, Amsterdam, the capital city of Netherlands, is a convenient spot for exploration and relaxation.
Guests can get a breath of fresh air with a stroll through the Erasmus Park, where ponds, gardens and local attractions make for a nice day of adventure or lazing in the sunshine. Moving inside, travellers can visit the Van Gogh Museum, which exhibits the works of the great master alongside pieces painted by his contemporaries. In this city of many tastes, tourists may enjoy Asian or Indonesian cuisine at one of the city’s restaurants or have dessert in one of the famous pancake houses, before renting a bicycle for a refreshing ride along the canals. Amsterdam also boasts shopping streets, filled with a wide range of stores and street markets selling food and clothes.
Groupon’s Guide to Paris
Combining a rich heritage with contemporary perks, this lively European capital is a place of historic, artistic and gastronomic treasures including museums, fountains, bridges, vineyards, cafes, restaurants and much more.
The City of Light marries classic artwork that can be discovered at The Louvre, or Le Musee d’Orsay, hosting masterpieces of Impressionism, with contemporary art. Here, churches are the oldest intact buildings, and stained glass windows pair up with flamboyant Gothic structures to give birth to architectural wonders, such as Sainte-Chapelle or Saint-Denis Basilica. Tourists can walk on the banks of the River Seine or through the Promenade Plantée park, while Champs Elysées offers high-end boutiques, glitzy showrooms, and the famous Arc de Triomphe. Once in Paris, travellers can get a taste of the French cuisine including pastry food, sea fruits and couscous, shop in exclusive boutiques and flea markets, dance the night away in one of the many night clubs available or enjoy a French Cancan show at the Moulin Rouge.
