The Experience
Travellers are invited to experience a 3- or 4-night self-drive cruise down the Caledonian Canal and Loch Ness. Every boat is like home on the water, fully equipped and functional with a large and well-decorated interior. Customers get the chance to drive the boat as captain. No licence or previous experience required - the base team will explain and demonstrate everything one needs to know for a safe ride.
The experience makes for a unique way of discovering the charm of Scottish wilderness - lochs hugged by the rugged valleys, hilltop castles and waterside towns with traditional pubs.
The Caledonian Canal connects the North Atlantic with the North Sea. The 100-kilometre (62-mile) passage runs from Loch Linnhe to Moray Firth; just about 37 kilometres (23 miles) of it is manmade and the canals have locks to raise and lower boats. The rest follows the main lochs of Lochy, Oich and Ness - which is 230 metres (775 feet) deep, 39 kilometres (24 miles) long and, as legend has it, is home to Nessie the monster.
Heading northeast from the base at Laggan on Caledonian canal cruises, holidaymakers will soon reach Loch Oich, the highest point on the passage at 32 metres (106 feet) above sea level. That’s not very high, and yet Mount Ben Nevis at Fort William rises 1,344 metres (4,409 feet), indicating the heights that surround it. At Oich, the waters flow to the sea from both directions.
