The Experience
At home amid the Christmas card vistas of Lapland, Voyage Active leads intrepid sled-drivers on excursions across the glistening winter planes, pine-filled forests and reindeer-strewn hills of the Arctic landscape. One night is spent in a traditional lodge fitted with full running water and electricity. By way of contrast, a candlelit wilderness cabin offers rustic homeliness alongside a frozen lake. The cabin interiors and bunks are warmed with a simple wood stove, while a sauna offers ample opportunity for some mid-adventure relaxation. Guests may enjoy a colourful show of the Northern Lights displayed on the night sky.
Ben Fogle’s ’New Lives In The Wild’ featured the Arctic experience of dog-sledding in an episode where he ventures to the wilderness cabin with no electricity nor running water. Guests will have the chance to meet the same dogs and the people featured in the programme.
The Itinerary
Day 1:
- Landing in Kiruna, meeting with the English-speaking guide to be taken to the lodge and kennels kitted out with Arctic clothing.
- Warming with a cup of hot drink, followed by a brief introduction to the experience.
- Meals included: dinner.
- Optional extra: optional visit to the ‘Ice Hotel’ (tour available for a supplement); Ice Hotel tour entry ticket is SEK 325 (paid directly to Ice Hotel).
Day 2:
- Breakfast and full dog sledding training, before travelling through forests and across frozen lakes to the wilderness cabin.
- Cabin with sauna, overnight stay and dinner amid the rustic surroundings.
- Possibility to see the Northern Lights after dinner (sighting not guaranteed as they are a natural phenomenon).
- Meals included: breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 3:
- Breakfast before setting out for the third day’s sledding trip, completed with an Arctic style picnic lunch.
- Return to the wilderness cabin for an overnight stay.
- Meals included: breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 4:
- Return to kennels with dog teams.
- Return transfer to Kiruna airport.
- Meals included: breakfast.
Experience Details
- Guests need to be in good health and will need to complete a short, confidential medical questionnaire when booking (the questionnaire is not designed to exclude participation but to inform the travel agent of any conditions that may be exacerbated in the cold).
- Transfers are provided at given times only in order to fit with the arrival/departure schedule of airlines in Kiruna. Times: around 1pm on arrival (day one) and 12pm drop-off on departure (suitable for 1pm or later flight on day four). Transfers requested outside of these times may incur a supplement.
- Excludes: alcohol, tips for guides (discretionary), ticket entry to the Ice Hotel.
Dog Sledding Details
Travellers will drive their own sled. Each driver/sled has four dogs and the driver is responsible for harnessing and unharnessing the dog team (travellers will be shown how). No previous experience of dog sledding is necessary.

Temperatures may drop to -30ºC or colder, so customers need to be aware that this may mean some activities would be shortened. It is recommended that visitors have a valid travel insurance policy in place that covers for driving their own dog sled.
