The Event
The neo-Palladian setting of Chiswick House and Gardens sees open-air theatre company Illyria showcase a pair of performances this summer against the backdrop of its landscaped gardens. Gilbert and Sullivan's popular comic opera The Pirates of Penzance comes to the Western Lawn on Friday 18 July, featuring timeless songs such as To Be a Pirate King and Modern Major General. Choreographed by West End veteran Grant Murphy and directed by Illyria founder and Artistic Director Oliver Grey, the show sports a reduced cast accompanied by keyboard as they tackle the score in its entirety. Robin Hood takes to the Western Walled Garden on Friday 25 July, looking to lend a little authenticity to the legends with fast-moving and accessible verse adapted from some of the earliest ballads about the man, pre-dating Chaucer. Featuring the likes of Little John, Friar Tuck, Maid Marian and King Richard, the show collects stories of camaraderie, action and laughter, with the audience given the chance to get involved with the infamous archery contest.
