The Clink Prison Museum
Strolls through Bankside can take a Medieval turn as pairs venture inside the confines of Clink Prison. Its nefarious past stretches back to the 14th century, having not only incarcerated prostitutes, vagrants and thieves, but some more notable criminals as well. Centuries of political change are reflected by the unfortunate inmates who found themselves behind its historic bars, whether Royalist supporters, Puritans or those who had fallen out of favour with the Crown. The prison was burnt down in 1780, but the museum preserves parts of its original structure. Visitors have the opportunity to see a number of artefacts, handle torture devices, and hear dark tales of inmates’ ordeals and conditions within the cells.
