Centenary Tanks and Tommies

Marking the 100th anniversary of the secret tank trials held during the Great War, Hatfield House will be hosting the Centenary Tanks and Tommies event on 10 and 11 September. Visitors and their families will be able to see a working Mark I tank replica, witness World War I reenactors recreating elements of the battles, and take part in a selection of talks and demonstrations. There will also be assault courses and numerous food and drink stands.

The day will include:

• Timed displays including tactical demonstrations
• The “Lest We Forget” Mk I tank replica and crew
• Acrobatic Aircraft Dog Fight
• Tented cinema showing The Battle of the Somme, The battle of the Ancre and Hatfield House’s Great War film
• Royal Artillery 18-pounder gun and crew
• British infantry recreated by The Rifles, The Territorials, Britannia, Discover History, Guarderobe with replica gas-fired Vickers guns and Lewis guns
• German infantry with gas fired Maxim gun
• French machine gun and crew
• Highland piper Phil Meadows
• Military padre, medics & civilians including the 1910 Girl Guide Group
• Cavalrymen with horse and mule.
• Talks by WW1 Tank expert Andrew Blow
• Historical presenter Stephen Wisdom will be holding talks about the Great War and set dress the British front line trench which will include the use of a small number of original Western Front barbed wire stakes
