About This Deal
The Deal
City lights are inspiring for passionate photographers but notoriously difficult to capture. Artists can perfect their pictures from behind the lens with this three hour walking tour of Newcastle's city centre. Photographer Neil Atkinson will guide them through the functions on their camera and help them create an image that they can be proud to hang on their wall.
Groupon asks Neil Atkinson about his photography heroes, his recent TV show and how he inspires others.
G: What made you want to teach photography?
"Life as a freelance photographer can sometimes be a solitary existence, and as a 'people person' I really enjoy being around a group of people who are passionate about photography. I've been taking images for almost 50 years, and it's very rewarding to be able to share that experience."
G: Who or what inspires you as a photographer?
"I'm inspired by people who are, in one way or another, pioneers. Frank Hurley took all of the images on Sir Ernest Shackleton's ill-fated trip to the South Pole in 1918, and he overcame unbelievable technical challenges to create what are still the most incredible expedition photographs ever taken. Starting with Pink Floyd in the 1960s, Storm Thorgerson designed and photographed countless iconic album cover images which are now embedded forever in modern music history and culture."
G: What do your students usually find most interesting about your classes?
"Most students are amazed at how simple and straightforward photography can be. Initially, many students are confused by all the technical aspects of their cameras, and some feel quite intimidated by them. Having someone to explain things in plain language and demonstrate everything at a manageable pace makes all the difference."
G: Tell us about your recent TV series?
"My TV series A Moment In Time was originally an idea for a book that, by pure accident, ended up as Britain's first TV series about photography. I interviewed several celebrities from the North East about their childhood memories, and then took images of places associated with those reminiscences, as well as location portraits of each guest. The result was a unique collection of images chosen by people who are deeply passionate about the region of their birth."
