Your detailed itinerary
DAY 1 | WELCOME TO MEXICO!
**Welcome to Mexico!
Upon arrival at Cancún airport, pick up your vehicle and drive to your hotel.
Journey by car: Cancun airport - Cancun 20 km (30 mins).
DAY 2 | EK BALAM AND CENOTE
In the morning, you will visit Ek Balam, or "black jaguar" in Mayan, an ancient religious centre of great importance in the region, comprising around 40 structures. All the temples are accessible to visitors, affording them the chance to enjoy superb views of the city and the surrounding jungle from a number of different vantage points. Ek Balam is not as famous as Chichen Itzá, yet it is a city full of serenity and mystery. You don't meet many visitors here, and that's what makes it so charming.
Around 1,500 metres from the town is the Xcanche cenote. To get there, you can hire bikes or walk. On site, abseiling, hammocks, and a zipline are all among the entertainment options.
Lunch available at the cenote ecotourism centre, surrounded by the jungle.
Return journey to Valladolid at the end of the day. By car: Valladolid - Ek Balam 30 km (30 mins).
DAY 3 | RIA LAGARTOS RESERVE AND CROCODILES
Departure for Rio Lagartos. Around a hundred kilometres north of Valladolid, this small fishing village is the gateway to the national park reserve of the same name. A veritable paradise for nature lovers. It's an ideal place to discover the Yucatán in a different way. You can board a "lancha" - a small motorboat - and set off on a tour of the mangrove. Then head to the famous pink lagoon known as "Las Coloradas".
Return journey to Valladolid at the end of the day. By car: Valladolid - Rio Lagartos 110 km (1 hour 30 minutes).
DAY 4 | SEVENTH WONDER OF THE WORLD AND MAGICAL VILLAGE
You will discover the marvellous archaeological site of Chichen Itza, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, and considered one of the "New Wonders of the World" since 2007. You will soak up the majesty of this site and the echoes of its past glory. You will then make your way to the Yokdznonot cenote** for a refreshing dip in its clear waters before heading to Izamal, the "magic village". One of the places you'll visit is the Franciscan convent of San Antonio de Padua, where the atrium is second only to that of the Vatican in terms of size. You can also climb the Kinich Pyramid for a breathtaking view of this yellow city. See out the day in Merida, the cultural capital of the Yucatán. A city of a million inhabitants, it is famous for its cathedral and Paseo Montejo, which is bordered by the lavish residences of the former masters of the Henequen industry. As you stroll through the colonial streets of the White City, you'll experience the romantic, provincial atmosphere that bears witness to a past that is rich in history and legend.
By car: Valladolid - Chichen Itza 45 km (45 mins) / Chichen Itza - Yokdzonot 25 km (25 mins) / Yokdzonot - Izamal 55 km (55 mins) / Izamal - Mérida 70 km (1 hour 10 mins).
DAY 5 | UXMAL AND CENOTES
After breakfast, you will visit Uxmal, a city listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Located in the heart of the Yucatán jungle, the name Uxmal means "three times built" in Mayan. The architecture of this site is particularly faithful to the Puuc style, with its geometric shapes, mosaics, and representations of the god Chaac - god of rain and thunder. You can then choose between several cenotes in the region. The closest to the site of Uxmal are the marvellous cenotes of San Antonio Mulix: X'batún y Dzombakal. The village is home to a community centre that manages entry to the cenotes, while also offering mountain bike hire for a more complete experience. You can also head north to the village of Mucuyche, where you'll start your tour with a visit to the hacienda** before taking a refreshing dip in thevillage's two cenotes, Carlote and Azul Maya. The third option is to visit the Santa Barbara Cenotes in the village of Homun. You'll make your way from one cenote to the next using an astonishing means of transport: the "truck"; a small cart pulled by horses on rails along a track in the middle of the bush, adding an incredible taste of adventure. For the more sporty, you can hire bicycles. On the way back you will stop at Yaxcopoil to admire an old hacienda that once brought great wealth to the peninsula.
By car: Merida - Uxmal 85 km (1 hour 10 mins) / Uxmal - San Antonio Mulix 50 km (45 mins) / Uxmal - Mucuyche 50 km (45 mins) / Uxmal - Homun 105 km (1 hour 50 mins).
DAY 6 | CAMPECHE
You will take the road towards Campeche. Stop en route in Becal, the hat capital. Once there, you will witness the creation of the famous "Panama", the preferred headgear of Latin American plantation owners. In the afternoon, you will explore the picturesque city of Campeche, the capital of the state of the same name. A port city looking onto the Gulf of Mexico, it exudes a tranquillity and nonchalance typical of the warmth and rhythm of its inhabitants. The Old Town gives the impression of a small Cuban town, with its **typical architecture consisting of colourful houses, Fort San Miguel, its "malecón" (promenade), and its colonial port, which has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.
Journey by car: Mérida - Becal 90 km (1 hour 20 mins) / Becal - Campeche 95 km (1 hour 20 mins).
DAY 7 | CALAKMUL
Early departure for the archaeological site of Calakmul. Located in the Campeche region, just a few kilometres from the border with Guatemala, Calakmul is a must for all lovers of history and nature. Surrounded by lush jungle, the site is classified by UNESCO as Mexico's only Mixed World Heritage Site on account of its biosphere and Mayan remains. You will set off along the paths leading from one temple to the next, gradually making your way into a jungle filled with the sounds of howler monkeys. This pre-Hispanic city was one of the largest metropolises in the south-east of the country during the Classical period (250-700 AD). With over 720,000 hectares of forest, the biosphere is home to a large number of animal and plant species, some of which are in danger of extinction. With its warm, humid climate, Calakmul is an unspoilt area where you can discover a wealth of hidden structures.
Journey by car: Campeche - Calakmul 305 km (4 hour 50 mins) / Calakmul ruins - Entrance to the reserve 65 km (1 hour 40 mins).
DAY 8 | THE LAGOON OF 7 COLOURS
Early departure for Bacalar. Renowned for its "lagoon of seven colours", Bacalar is a pearl of the Caribbean, close to the Belize border to the south of the Yucatán peninsula. This small town is known for its history and rich natural resources. The lagoon is made up of seven different cenotes, from which it takes its name, and is around 42 km long and 2 km wide. Bacalar was an important commercial crossroads for the Mayans; a veritable trading post between Central America and the Yucatán Peninsula. Take a stroll through the town centre and visit Fort San Felipe, constructed in 1729 - an example of the military architecture of New Spain, which has seen a number of battles and conflicts.
By car: Calakmul - Bacalar 180 km (2 hours 15 mins).
DAY 9 | BACALAR
Day trip to Bacalar. Renowned for its "lagoon of seven colours", it can be explored through a variety of activities, including boat trips and kayaking. You can also visit Fort San Felipe, constructed in 1729 - an example of the military architecture of New Spain, which has seen a number of battles and conflicts. If you'd like to find out more about Mayan culture, you can visit the Kohunlich site, 1 hour from Bacalar and part of la Ruta Rio Bec. Here you will discover the incredible Temple of Masks, 5 of which have been restored.
DAY 10 | THE CARIBBEAN
You will leave Bacalar for the north coast. Discover Tulum, one of the jewels of the Riviera Maya. Tulum means "wall " in the Mayan language, and this is more than apt, with the city boasting some of the finest remains of this ancient civilisation. You will have the chance to discover this ancient city, perched on a cliff like an ancient fortress overlooking the Caribbean Sea. A breathtaking panoramic view of the Paraíso and Maya beaches** awaits, sure to impress as much for its contrasting colours as for its proximity to the jungle, the sea, and the city. You can then head off to one of the beaches below and enjoy a moment of rest and relaxation. Tulum combines beautiful beach scenery and historic sites, making it a firm favourite among travellers.
By car: Bacalar - Tulum 215 km (2 hours 40 mins).
DAY 11 | SIAN KA'AN RESERVE
You will then travel to the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, one of the largest in Mexico and located close to Tulum. This reserve includes **tropical forests, mangrove swamps, and marshes, as well as a vast marine area spanned by a coral reef. It boasts an impressive diversity of flora and fauna, including jaguars, manatees, turtles, birds, and dolphins. To get there, you will have to pass through Muyil, where you'll find the entrance to the site. Upon arrival, you can board a boat with a local guide who will accompany you through the lagoons. You will then make your way along the canals created by the Mayans where you will don your life jacket and let yourself be carried by the current as you sit in the water. You will return to Tulum in the late afternoon. You're now free to stay in the city or enjoy the sandy beach.
By car: Tulum - Muyil 30 km (40 mins).
DAY 12 | COBA AND PUNTA LAGUNA RESERVE
Departure for Coba. Once you arrive at the archaeological site, you can rent bicycles to get around more easily. You'll reach the main and the tallest pyramid in the region, from where you'll enjoy an exceptional view of the jungle. You will then continue on to the Punta Laguna nature reserve. You can take a walk** through the Yucatán jungle and, with a bit of luck, come across spider or howler monkeys, kayak on the lagoon, or explore a cenote accompanied by a local guide. Return to Tulum at the end of the day.
By car: Tulum - Coba 55 km (1 hour) / Coba - Punta Laguna 20 km (20 mins) / Punta Laguna - Tulum 70 km (1 hour).
DAY 13 | TULUM AND CENOTES
You will visit Tulum, the **only known Mayan port, which saw the arrival of the first conquistadors several centuries ago. Tulum means "wall " in the Mayan language, and this is more than apt, with the city boasting some of the finest remains of this ancient civilisation. You'll discover this ancient city perched on a cliff like an ancient fortress overlooking the Caribbean Sea, and offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the Paraíso and Maya beaches, sure to impress as much for its contrasting colours as for its proximity to the jungle, the sea, and the city. You can then head to one of the beaches below and enjoy a moment of relaxation. After lunch, you can visit one or several of the cenotes. These freshwater springs are dotted all over the peninsula. In fact, they are the only source of drinking water in the region. The Mayans considered them to be the gateways to the underworld. Discover this subterranean world in the cool waters of the splendid cenotes of Dos Ojos, Cristallino, Cenote Azul, and Gran Cenote.
