Your detailed itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Heraklion
Upon your arrival, you will receive the keys of your rental vehicle and your logbook. Heraklion, the capital of the island, is famous for its lively bars, restaurants and nightclubs. The port, the Venetian ramparts, the archaeological museum, the historical and ethnographic museum and the ruins of Knossos are well worth a visit.
Dinner and night at the hotel.
Please note: Depending on your flight schedule, any vehicle pickup or drop-off between 11:30pm and 7:30am will be subject to an additional charge, payable on site (see below for information on your car hire)
Day 2: Heraklion - Knossos - Heraklion (20km)
Breakfast at the hotel.
On the road to visit the city of Heraklion and its archaeological museum with a unique collection of Minoan antiquities and archaeological finds from the Neolithic to the Roman period) before continuing to Knossos, where you'll find an impressive Minoan site.
Dinner and overnight stay in the Heraklion region.
Day 3: Heraklion - Lassithi - Spinalonga Island - Agios Nikolaos (150 km)
Breakfast at your hotel before heading to the Agios Nikolaos region.
We suggest the following visits:
- The Lassithi Plateau is situated in the south of coastal town Malia, at an altitude of about 850 m. The area is famous for its 10,000 small windmills, picturesque roads and beautiful landscapes. This rural side of Crete is known for its harsh winters and snow-covered peaks until late spring.
- On the road to the Lassithi Plateau we recommend you make a stop in the villages along the way and at the Psychro Cave, a sacred cave and – according to Greek mythology – the birthplace of Zeus. Continue to the picturesque village of Kritsa, famous for its embroideries and the Byzantine chapel. In the port of Elounda, board the ferry to cross to the uninhabited island of Spinalonga.
Dinner and overnight stay in the Agios Nikolaos region.
Day 4: Agios Nikolaos - Sitia - Agios Nikolaos
Breakfast at the hotel.
Departure to the port of Sitia to reach the fine sandy beach of Vai and its famous palm grove. Then, departure for the Toplou Monastery, located in the extreme north-east of the island. According to the frescoes in the oldest part of the church, it was built in the 14th century, however, its foundation could date back much further. The heavily fortified monastery flourished in the 15th century and offers a fascinating look into the monastic history of Crete. For space-saving but also protection, the living units are built on three floors.
Dinner and overnight in the Agios Nikolaos region.
Day 5: Agios Nikolaos - Rethymno (190 km)
Breakfast at the hotel.
Road to Rethymno. We suggest the following visits: Stop at the village of Fodele, then visit the monastery of Arkadi and the village of Margarites.
Dinner and overnight in the Rethymno region.
Day 6: Explore South Crete
Breakfast at the hotel.
We suggest the following visits: Head for a day of exploration in southern Crete. Take the road that goes down to Timbaki, through the village of Spili and visit the Minoan palace of Festos, then the site of Gortys, and then continue towards the fishing village of Matala. On the way back to Rethymno, don't miss the superb monastery of Preveli.
Dinner and overnight stay in the Rethymno region.
Please note: admission fees for the suggested visits are not included.
Day 7: Rethymno - Chania - Rethymno
Breakfast at the hotel.
We suggest the following visits:
Road to Chania, the second-largest city of the island. Its remarkable Venetian influences are best reflected in the old houses and ramparts surrounding the old port. In the surroundings of Chania you'll find typical villages, the Akrotiri peninsula and the Agia Triada monastery.
Dinner and overnight in the Rethymno area.
Day 8: Rethymno- Departure Heraklion
Breakfast at the hotel. Enjoy your last morning before heading to the airport.
Depending on your flight times, return the vehicle to the airport before your return flight.
Please note: Depending on your flight times, any vehicle pickup or drop-off between 11.30pm and 7.30am will be subject to an additional charge, payable directly on site (see below for information on your car hire). For the return trip we recommend that you choose a flight that doesn't leave too early in order to enjoy your last morning and have plenty of time to return your car at the airport.
