The Deal

This family pass lets two adults and two kids dive into a nautical world filled with sea-life, reptiles and mammals. They can get up close to deadly piranhas, stingrays and pufferfish, and watch the black-tip reef shark cut its predatory path through the water. Guests can compare their facial hair with that of the long-whiskered harbour seal and bearded dragon, and take snaps of the alligators and caiman. The tour can also feature a cutesy appearance from the miniature meerkats, as well as penguins. Feeding times for seals and penguins are held at midday and 2pm respectively, and visitors will have their hands full in the reptile and spider handling sessions at 11.30am and 2.30pm. Children under 2 can enjoy the exhibits for free, while additional tickets can be purchased at £7 for a child and £10 for an adult.

The Merchant

Set against a statuesque cliff backdrop, St Andrews Aquarium features a procession of sea life, creepy-crawlies and furry mammals. The centre hosts birthday parties and school trips for marine-mad munchkins, and has cemented its family-friendly credentials with a nomination for Best Visitor Attraction at the Scottish Thistle Awards 2014. An on-site cafe lets guests rest weary legs and quench hunger pangs with freshly-baked cakes, while the gift shop stocks an array of educational toys and mementos. Visitors after more than a stroll round the exhibits can get hands-on in seal, penguin and meerkat feeding sessions. The aquarium opens its door seven days a week, from 10am to 6pm.
