The Deal
A terrine maison of duck, served with field mushrooms and pistachios is just one of the starters for diners to choose. Moving on, mains from the chef’s pick of the season menu include a pan fried pave of halibut, with baby leeks and thyme macaroni, a slow roast shoulder of South Down lamb, or a Burgundy wine and local wild mushroom risotto. To finish, diners have a few sweet treats to choose from including a dark chocolate ganache, sorbet, ice cream or sticky toffee pudding. Upgrades are also available, with a main sirloin steak for an additional £5, or a cheeseboard for a £2 surcharge. A glass of wine each can be sipped alongside meals.

The Merchant
The Earl of March can trace its origins back to the 18th century when it was originally a coaching inn where famous poet William Blake penned the words for “Jerusalem”. Today it is owned by by Giles Thompson, former executive head chef of the Ritz Hotel. Since 2005, the establishment has undergone a radical transformation into its current standing as a purveyor of haute cuisine using locally-sourced ingredients where possible. Set in the idyllic village of East Lavant near Chichester, beautifully presented meals can be enjoyed in the cosy indoor setting or in the garden with its views of the rolling vistas of the South Downs.

The Earl of March has received a comforting 4/5 stars on TripAdvisor who have also awarded them with a Certificate of Excellence 2014 and has been listed under Top 50 pubs of 2015 on The Good Food Guide.
