About The Bishop's Palace

Dating back to the year 1206, The Bishop's Palace once served as suitably grand lodgings for the medieval bishops of Bath and Wells. The historic edifice is surrounded by a moat and features a flagstone drawbridge, vaulted entrance and portcullis. Within, visitors can find restored furnishings, explore the ruined hall and admire the chapel's decorative murals.

Venturing back outside, the 14 acres of gardens encompass well pools, rare plants and flower displays. Guests can observe the greenery from viewing platforms, spot wildlife such as swans or stop by an arboretum, home to the newly built Dragon's Lair play area, with an array of climbing frames, tree pods and a water wheel with pump and sluice gates. The Bishop's Table serves refreshments, and there are plenty of picnic spots scattered around. The venue offers guided tours and seasonal events such as plant fairs, historical re-enactments and theatrical performances.
