Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a centuries old form of Chinese medicine where thin filiform needles are placed at specific points on the body. These points are based on channels that run through the body, and the channel that is used is dictated by the patients symptoms. By stimulating these channels, the acupuncturists goal is release the body’s ‘Chi’ or vital energy. As well as being used to treat pain, acupuncture is used to treat many other conditions such as headaches, hay fever, depression and blood pressure issues to name but a few. Acupuncture generally is not painful, however it is not unusual to feel sore at the needle site for a few days after. Most patients leave the appointment feeling rejuvenated and energised.
Cupping
As a form of therapy, cupping has been used for thousands of years as a form of treatment for pain, relaxation, deep massage as to improve blood flow and reduce inflammation. The cups may be made from glass with fire being used to create the vacuum, however modern cupping uses a rubber pump on silicone cups in order to create the suction affect. The cups may be moved around whilst on the patient as a form of deep tissue massage or fascial release. The clinician may also get the patient to do movements whilst the cups are on, which can help stretch out tight muscles and help improve the ease of movement. It is very common to have marks left on the site of cupping which lasts several days.
