Who is Kidscape and what do they do?

Kidscape is the first charity in the UK established specifically to help prevent bullying and child sexual abuse. Their key commitment is to keep children safe from harm and through their helpline, literature, training programmes and tailored advice they support children and their families across the UK and Ireland.

What central issue is the charity tackling?

Fundmentally, it's child safety. Every year, at least 20 child and adolescent suicides are directly attributed to bullying. As many as 1 in 12 children are badly bullied to the point that it affects their education, relationships and even their job prospects in later life. At any one time, around 16,000 people between the ages of 11 and 15 are absent from school as a result of bullying.

What's the story behind the helpline?

They were the first charity in the UK to operate a helpline specifically to support and educate the parents of bullied children. They take calls from parents, grandparents, carers and others concerned about a child in harm's way and in response they offer guidance, information and advice.

How does Kidscape help?

In addition to the helpline they disperse literature, posters, training guides and educational videos on bullying, child protection and parenting. A national comprehensive training programme on child safety and behaviour management issues includes information on assertiveness training for children, bullying intervention and workshops for professionals. All their advice is tailored specifically to individual parents, carers, professionals and young people themselves, with the ultimate aim of enabling them to challenge abuse and bullying in all its forms.
