Kiplin Hall was built in the 17th century by George Calvert, Secretary of State to James I and founder of Maryland. This intriguing house is now furnished as a comfortable Victorian home with 16 rooms open to the public. The Hall is crowded with an eclectic mix of previous owners’ furniture, paintings, portraits and personalia, including many Arts and Crafts items. Among numerous original paintings from the 16th-19th centuries are works by Beuckelaer, Carlevarijs, Kauffman and Watts. This year’s exhibition is ‘Duty Calls – Kiplin Hall in Times of War’ which examines the role of the house, its owners, their extended families and the local community in wars from the Civil War to the Second World War. Outside, visitors can stroll around ornamental gardens, the walled kitchen garden and enjoy lakeside and woodland walks. Home baking and lunches are served in the Tea Room.
