The surroundings of the building transport visitors back to bygone times with hands-on displays. Entry for two adults (usually £7 each) or a family of four (£21) allows visitors to experience the historical setting as they explore the everywhere from the dungeons to the pleasure grounds. The castle is believed to date back as far as the 10th century, with the original building later fortified with the addition of a motte and bailey during Norman times. It continued to see new adaptations throughout the eras as it was passed from hand to hand. Different parts of the castle reflect the influence of these various periods in time, demonstrated by the Tudor and Stuart chambers, the grand Victorian reception rooms and the medieval great hall.
