The Deal

With £30 per pair to spend, diners can peruse the The Sirloin Pub & Restaurant's menu of British fare. The selection of starters includes dishes such as chicken and sesame seed goujons with smoky BBQ sauce (usually £3.95), or a trio of scallops served on mint purée and crispy pancetta (£7.95). The menu's mains include steak and ale pie (£9.95) and beer-battered fish and chips (£10.25). Alternatively, pairs can spring for a sharing platter like the veggie board, which comprises tempura-battered vegetables, ratatouille, grilled Mediterranean vegetables, onion rings and garlic and herb wedges (£10.95).

The Merchant

Several centuries ago, The Sirloin Pub & Restaurant was a coaching house with a different name. It received its present moniker after King James I, according to local legend, knighted a particularly succulent loin of beef in nearby Houghton Tower, and the inn was renamed to memorialise this auspicious occasion. Today's pub retains much of the inn's old character, with original floors, low ceilings and log fires. This atmosphere is complemented by the restaurant's range of pub classics, and accompanying the homemade fare is a selection of drinks which includes cask ales from Prospect & Thwaites, Moorhouses and other celebrated brewers.
