Debenhams’ commitment to responsible fashion
Shopping with a conscience is easy with brands like Debenhams, which focuses on minimising its impact on the environment, maintaining ethical trade standards and human rights, and supports numerous charities.
Debenhams have a £1 million annual fundraising target and, in 2018, beat it. The company raised £1.5 million for their national charity partners: Look Good Feel Better, Help For Heroes, Breast Cancer Now, Children In Need and Make A Wish Ireland.
For Debenhams, doing their bit focuses around three areas, with the following successes:
Equality | Community | Environment |
Championing diversity and promoting body positivity, using Help for Heroes rehabilitated troops, women up to the age of 70, a paralympic athlete and size 18 models to showcase their clothes. | Fundraising efforts include: a donation of profits from the sale of exclusive products; the sale of charity partners’ merchandise; an annual charity ball as well as colleague challenges from a 500km bike ride to bake sales. | In 2018, 97% of the waste produced was diverted away from landfill, including 6.3 tonnes of product donated to the Salvation army. Debenhams’ overall carbon footprint has decreased by 21% between 2017 and 2018. |
In addition, Debenhams has prioritised animal welfare, in recognition of the growing focus on ethics. Sustainable fashion has never been in such high demand. And it’s something Debenhams are committed to offering their customers, recently winning the best down-free bedding in the first ever PETA Vegan Homewares Awards.
What's more, Debenhams:
- Does not support animal testing
- Has a no-fur policy (including feathers)
The importance of supporting sustainable fashion
In the UK, we buy more clothes per person than any other country in Europe, according to the latest government reports. And around a million tonnes of textiles gets discarded every year – £140 million worth of clothes going to landfill. The dominance of ‘fast fashion’ means we end up creating an excessive amount of waste. And with research from the Hubbub Foundation suggesting that 17% of young people wouldn’t wear an outfit again if it had been shared on Instagram, it’s time to change our attitudes.
Buy clothes you’d love to wear again and again, and you can contribute to the sustainable future of fashion. That’s because extending the life of clothing by an extra nine months could reduce carbon, waste and water footprints by around 20–30% each.
